Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
A product of the Michigan Tech University Huskies between 1973 and 1976, a period of time when the school appeared in the NCAA National Championship Game in all three (3) seasons, winning the title in 1975, George Lyle would be drafted 123rd overall by the Detroit Red Wings at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. Turning pro with the WHA's New England Whalers after graduating, Lyle would go on to play a total of 99 games in the National Hockey League, split between both the Red Wings and Whalers. Offered here, we present this Detroit Red Wings jersey worn by Lyle during his rookie season of 1979-80. A mesh construction offering made by Stall & Dean, brand labeling along with laundering, size "50" and year "9" tags are affixed to the collar, with "8" handwritten to the label. There is also an Olympic label on the inside hem and a garter-style fight strap on the vintage garment. Styled with the classic fully-embroidered winged-wheel Red Wings team crest over the chest, Lyle's number "18" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in single white twill while evidence of the once sewn on long nameplate is observed over the upper reverse. Of note, the removal of the nameplate has resulted in some holes in the material over that area which have gone unrepaired. Exhibiting good game-wear, including team repairs over both sleeves, stick marks and board burns are present over the lower front and both sleeves while a light red board paint transfer mark is found over the reverse hem. Also sporting heavy pilling on the interior, the reverse of the jersey shows numerous white and blue coloured stains that are worth mentioning for accuracy.
