Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
Believed to be first worn by Whitey Merritt of the Victoria Hockey Club of Winnipeg in the late 19th century, padding of the lower extremities for goaltenders was essential, especially as the game developed. Cricket pads were the models of choice to start, with reeded canvas examples all the rage. Modeled after the specimens worn by cricketeers, we have an exceedingly rare pair of circa 1910s and possibly earlier hockey goaltender pads. Approx 24" in length and extremely thin in comparison to more modern pads, each features horsehair stuffing with wooden reeds covered in brown leather. Sadly, there are no makers marks, with the possibility of custom manufacturing by a leathersmith as retail models were likely hard to come by. As such, the quality of the pads is absolutely top tier for the era, with manufacture by an elite sporting goods firm very possible. Both pads have the original strapping fully intact, with just a single strap on one of the pads expertly repaired. The pair show good use and remain complete, with a few small areas where the leather has worn to reveal the horsehair interior. "ATT. CC" is also handwritten to the interior of one of the pads. This is the earliest pair of goalie pads that we have ever offered.
