Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024

Once called “the most talented player I have ever seen” by the iconic Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux was the only player able to compete on fairly equal footing with the one and only Wayne Gretzky. From the early-2000s, we have a signed stick used by the legendary superstar. A Nike Quest 3 model in Pens colours and preferred by Mario in the twilight of his career, “M. Lemieux” factory graphics appear on the upper shaft, along with a stamped factory code "031107 01"on the underside. Featuring Lemieux's black rubber grip over the handle/knob and appearing to never have had any tape wrapped around the blade, the stick remains in good condition with no cracks or breaks while showing handling wear/age in the form of a few marks and abrasions seen throughout the entirety of the piece. Signed by Lemieux over the forehand side of the blade with a large black marker ink signature, the 1997 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee has had an inscription reading "To Larry - Best Wishes" (Larry being NFL Hall of Famer and former University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald) alongside the signature in matching ink. Of note, the stick is accompanied by a program from The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation charity auction from which it was acquired from that states that is a "game-used" stick but after inspection we have determined its likely only a game-issued example as no signs of game wear are observed.
