Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
The National Hockey League’s fourth annual Winter Classic in 2011 pitted Alex Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals against Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins in front of 68,111 fans who packed Heinz Field in the Steel City as the visiting Capitals defeated the hometown Pens by a score of 3-1 in the first New Years Day contest played under the lights in primetime. From that game, we have this Penguins jersey worn by Brent Johnson during the first (1st) period while serving as Pittsburgh's back-up goaltender. A vintage style offering made by Reebok, both "Goalie Style" and size "58+" labels are affixed to the inner collar while the crests of both the NHL and Reebok adorn the front and reverse necklines. Styled over the front with a vintage style Penguins team crest in felt with embroidered details, the sleeves and verso of the garment has been accented with Johnson's number “1” is dual layer cream-over-baby blue tackle twill numerals while “Johnson” is spelt out in single layer cream coloured twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate. Retaining its fight strap on the interior and sporting the 2011 NHL Winter Classic event patch over the right breast, the jersey remains in excellent condition overall since it was only worn in a back-up capacity. Featuring an event specific Penguins team tag sewn inside the reverse hem along with a MeiGray label numbered "H06042", when referenced with the company's Population Report, it shows that the jersey is a "Navy Retro Winter Classic Period 1 - Back Up Only - NHL Set" example. A matching MeiGray LOA will accompany the piece.
