Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024

An extreme rarity dating back to the middle of the 19th century and a time approximately forty (40) odd years before Lord Stanley, then serving as the Governor General of Canada, donated his now famous Cup, offered here is this pair of scare blacksmith made ice skates that date to the era of the mid-1850s. Hand forged and hand carved, the early blacksmith made offerings likely originate from Canada but show strong English influence, sporting a large heel screw that is typical of English skates of the era and earlier. Featuring wooden violin shaped wooden platforms that are typical of very early skates, some of the original dark green milk paint remains over both. Measuring an overall length of 12" with a platform length and height of 10 3/8" and 1 3/4" respectively, the blades are a wide 5/16" and are at an obtuse angle that is wider at the platform than at the ice while broadening to a wide spoon curl at the toes. Showcasing a repair to the front of one of the wooden platforms, both heel screws have been repaired and all the leather straps are present but not entirely intact. Extremely unique, the pair is a wonderful example of both very early and rare skates for you to consider.
