Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
A near-complete set of the very first hockey cards, available to consumers in packages of cigarettes well over 100 years ago and offered to serious collectors here constitutes a hobby happening, with several of the men responsible for making early professional hockey a happening featured amid the nearly three (3) dozen well-preserved darlings. Having all been encapsulated for preservation and display by PSA and having been recently received back from grading. Missing just the likes of 24-Poulin and 35-Marshall, all the cards making up the checklist are designated as rookie cards, with the first group of six (6) PSA slabs housing the cards of some of the most prominent hockey forefathers to be featured on the small cardboard specimens including the likes of #8 Art Ross (PSA GOOD 2), #12 Art Ross (PSA GOOD+ 2.5), #15 Fred Taylor (PSA GOOD 2) and #36 Newsy Lalonde (PSA GOOD 2 - "MC" designation). Also sporting a second group that includes over century old cardboard of #1 Frank Patrick (PSA GOOD 2), #13 Ed Decary (PSA GOOD+ 2.5), #16 Joseph Cattarinigh (PSA GOOD+ 2.5), #21 Jack Laviolette (PSA GOOD+ 2.5), #23 Didier Pitre (PSA GOOD+ 2.5) and #26 Lester Patrick (PSA GOOD 2). For the rest of the included cards, present are the beauties of #32 Harold McNamara (PSA EX 5), #18 Nick Bawlf (PSA VG-EX 4), #30 Ernest Johnston (PSA VG-EX 4 - "MC" designation), #7 Marty Walsh (PSA VG 3), #9 Angus Campbell (PSA VG 3), #19 Jim Jones (PSA VG 3), #27 Fred Lake (PSA VG 3), #10 Harry Hyland (PSA VG 3 - "MC" designation), #3 Gordon Roberts (PSA GOOD+ 2.5), #29 C. Toms (PSA GOOD+ 2.5), #4 Barney Holden (PSA GOOD 2), #5 Pud Glass (PSA GOOD 2), #6 Edgar Day (PSA GOOD 2), #14 Tom Dunderdale (PSA GOOD 2), #17 Bruce Stuart (PSA GOOD 2), #20 Ernest Russell (PSA GOOD 2), #25 Art Bernier (PSA GOOD 2), #33 Jack Marshall (PSA GOOD 2), #34 Bruce Ridpath (PSA GOOD 2), #22 Riley Hern (PSA GOOD 2 - "MC" designation), #11 Herb Clark (PSA FR 1.5), #31 Horace Gaul (PSA FR 1.5), Percy Lesueur (PSA PR 1) and finally, #28 Paddy Moran (PSA PR 1). A true treasure to behold that is worthy of serious consideration, all the PSA holders remain in excellent condition with no obvious flaws to make mention of.
