Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
“The Trail of the Stanley Cup" is the definite prerequisite to any important hockey library. Author Charles Coleman's complete history of hockey and Lord Stanley's trophy from 1893 to 1967 is contained within these three books. Only 1,000 copies of the special leather-bound editions of the first and second volumes were produced and presented to important hockey figures, while the third was limited to 1,500 copies. We have a three volume set, with each the desirable leather-bound editions, with the first two volumes originally presented to noted journalist Red Fisher, with each numbered “502” (volume one also has a Fisher NHL bookplate). The third volume is numbered “720”. The group remains in gorgeous overall condition with just very light handling to each volume.
Beginning his job as reporter for The Montreal Star on the night of the infamous Richard Riot in 1955, Red Fisher remained with the Star for a quarter-century before moving on to the Montreal Gazette as sports editor in 1979. Fisher also served as president of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association from 1968 to 1970. The longest-serving beat writer for an NHL team, Fisher covered the Canadiens right up until the late-1970s which included the club's famous late-1950s and late-1970s Stanley Cup dynasties, and he was instrumental in his coverage of the Summit Series in 1972. Throughout his career, he worked for ten editors and publishers, and won the Canadian National Newspaper Award three times.
