A Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom who served as Colonial Secretary from 1885 to 1886, Lord Stanley is best known to Canadians and hockey fans for donating the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, later to be known as the Stanley Cup. This original 1888 typed letter on government letterhead and signed by the Under Secretary of State Powell mentions a poem to be sent to the newly appointed Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley, with the original poem dated Dec 1, 1888 accompanying the letter. The letter is approx 8" x 13", with a Canadian coat of arms centered over the top along with a handwritten file number and the date of June 2, 1888. As mentioned, the text of the letter is typed, with Powell signing in fountain pen. The poem is approx 8 1/4" x 10 1/2", and is titled "A Welcome to His Excellency" and is printed in blue ink. Both documents sport original fold lines and some toning, with a few small edge tears to the poem and a paper clip mark to each. Documents featuring Lord Stanley and his appointment as Governor General are scarce, making this an ideal candidate for inclusion within any advanced Stanley Cup collection.
