Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
Rumored to have been donated due to the violent play of notorious blueliner and arch-villain Sprague Cleghorn, Evelyn Byng, Viscountess Byng of Vimy, created the trophy that bears her name to be awarded for gentlemanly play. As a long devoted fan of the Ottawa Senators along with her husband, Lady Byng wanted to encourage and reward good sportsmanship. We offer a photo engraving made by the Photogelatine Engraving Co. Ltd Ottawa signed by Byng. Produced circa-1915 from an original Rice Co. photo, the engraving is 13" x 18", with Byng pictured in regalia. She has signed on the base beneath the photo, and the signature is gorgeous with no issues. Byng passed away in June of 1949. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
