Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Released in years that saw the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates claim World Series championships, the Topps baseball card releases from both 1978 and 1979 each featured a total of 726-cards in their checklists, both releases sport a simple design over their fronts and were released in their entirety in a gigantic single series. Offered here, we present this lot that features complete sets of both the 1978 and 1979 Topps baseball releases. Starting with the earlier of the two (2) sets, the 1978 assembly is found to be in the overall largely uniform condition range of EX to EX-MT with some EX-MT to NM examples spread throughout as well. Including key cards of 6-Ryan RB (EX-MT to NM), 36-Murray RC (EX to EX-MT - light surface print marks along the bottom), 72-Dawson (EX-MT to NM - 1st solo card), 100-Brett (EX to EX-MT - surface "snow"), 200-Rose (VG - tiny wrinkle down the middle to the bottom), 360-Schmidt (EX-MT to NM), 400-Ryan (EX - tiny ding at the top right), 580-Carew (EX-MT to NM) and 707-Molitor/Trammell RC (EX-MT to NM). Additionally, all the checklists are unmarked but the included copy of card #74 has a black coloured factory print mark over its front that is worth noting for accuracy while the other stars found within the set are in a condition consistent with the rest of the cards listed above.
For the 1979 release, found to be in the overall consistent condition range of EX to EX-MT throughout but with many affected by poor centering, something that plagued this particular release, it is worth noting that card #55 of Willie Stargel is completely miscut and that the checklist cards all remain in their original unmarked state. Including key examples of 24-Molitor (EX to EX-MT - 1st solo card - 80-20 centering), 30-Winfield (EX to EX-MT - 90-10 centering), 115-Ryan (EX-MT to NM), 116-Smith RC (slight corner wear and off-center top-to-bottom), 310-Munson (VG-EX to EX - surface bump - last card before passing), 330-Brett (FR to G - surface damage), 610-Schmidt (G to VG - small surface wrinkles), 640-Murray (EX to EX-MT - 2nd year card), 650-Rose (VG-EX to EX - print mark down the left side) and 700-Jackson (EX-MT - off-center). Of note, the other stars found throughout the checklist are in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the release.
