Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024

A year of Major League Baseball that saw the Baltimore Orioles defeat the Cincinnati Reds in the 67th edition of the World Series, the 1970 Topps baseball release featured a checklist with a staggering 720-cards for youngsters to chase, the largest set from the company to that point in time. With Thurman Munson being the key rookie card of the release as well as those of Vida Blue, Bill Buckner, Hal McRae, Bill Russell, Larry Bowa, and Darrell Evans, the changing times were immediately realized as the 1970 Topps Baseball set saw the first price increase for a wax pack since 1952. To lessen the impact of the jump in pack price from five cents to ten, Topps included three different insert sets. Each wax pack contained either a player biopic booklet, a poster or a Scratch-Off game card. Offered here, we present this complete set of Topps' 1970 baseball release. An overall inconsistent assembly with many low-grade cards throughout that are mixed in with cards closer to the VG and VG-EX condition ranges, some found to be around the neighborhood of VG-EX to EX are spread throughout as well. For the key cards, included are those of 10-Yastrzemski (GOOD - small creases over the left and right side borders), 140-Jackson (PR to F - 2nd year card - worn, creased and corner wear/damage), 189-Munson RC (FR to G - creased), 197-Ryan WS (FR to G - corners and worn out), 290-Carew (PR to F - large creases), 350-Clemente (FR to G - pinhole in the top border), 458-Rose AS (GOOD - scrapbook paper residue on the reverse), 459-Jackson AS (FR to G - large crease), 462-Aaron AS (VG-EX to EX - corner wear), 500-Aaron (PR to F - creased, corner wear/damage and dents), 530-Gibson (PR to F - large creases and corner wear/damage), 580-Rose (VG to VG-EX - slightly miscut), 600-Mays (G to VG - corners), 630-Banks (G to VG - off-center and elastic marks), 660-Bench (G to VG - creases that shows on the reverse), 700-F. Robinson (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear) and 712-Ryan (GOOD - two small creases). Additionally, it is worth nothing that all the checklist remain in their original unmarked state and that there is an extra copy of checklist card #432 which is also unmarked.
