Representative of SPORT magazine's stature, in the hearts and minds of the reading public, but also of the men who ran the leagues and teams across North America, was the magazine's success in establishing the SPORT Award in 1955 for the most valuable player in the World Series. The concept was expanded over the years until a SPORT magazine award was presented to the outstanding post-season performer in all four major team sports, as sanctioned by the leagues. Hailing from a season in which he registered a stat line of 42 goals and 62 assists for a total of 104 in 78 games played during the regular season, the only member of the New York Islanders to finish among the top 10 scorers in the National Hockey League for the year, Bryan Trottier would continue his prowess in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, posting a total of 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points in 21 games played as the Islanders would knock off Los Angeles, Boston, Buffalo and Philadelphia to claim their first (1st) Stanley Cup in franchise history and the first (1st) in their run of four (4) straight. Named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner at the conclusion of the Finals, offered here is this Sport Magazine "Most Valuable Player" award that was presented to Trottier for the 1980 Stanley Cup Finals. Standing a large 26" in height with nearly 11" of it being an all black base that is 11 3/4" wide on each side at the bottom and tapering to 8" on each side at the top, the top of the award features a Bauer hockey skate that has been completely encased in a silvery coating while a silver-colored plaque on the front has been engraved with "Sport Magazine's Most Valuable Player Award - National Hockey League - 1980 Stanley Cup Finals - Bryan Trottier - New York Islanders". Highly desirable and presenting well overall with just a bit of minor tarnishing and some scratches over the front plaque, the black wooden base also shows well with just some minor wear and marks from age, display and handling while also separating slightly from the bottom. Hailing from Trottier's personal collection a Trottier Family letter of authenticity will accompany the piece.
