Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
A product of Cape Breton in the Q and sitting 2nd all-time in career wins by a goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury has played twenty (20) seasons in the National Hockey League and has won a trio of Stanley Cups with the Penguins in 2009, 2016 and 2017 as well as both the Vezina Trophy and Jennings Trophy in 2021 with the Vegas Golden Knights. Offered here, we have this RBK Premier Series II blocker and glove set worn briefly by Fleury during the 2007-08 season. Bright yellow with silver accent offerings that "Flower" was known for during the early portion of his legendary career, "Fleury" is embroidered into each piece while RBK appears over the face of each as well. Sporting a silver colored lace pocket on the glove, both pieces remain in overall excellent condition with just very light rubbing appearing over the palm of the blocker and a handful of light puck marks over both. Adding to their appeal, the future Hall of Fame inductee has signed over the face of both gloves with black marker ink signatures that display without issue.
Unable to be photo-matched, the light use can possibly be explained due to the fact that Fleury suffered a high-ankle sprain on December 6th against the Calgary Flames and was out until his return on March 2nd. Furthermore, when he returned, Fleury had switched from his iconic bright yellow pads and gloves to a subtle all white colourway set, a colourway he would wear from that point on for the most part, pretty much retiring the all yellow examples. With this set likely meant to be used at the start of the new year and most likely in the very early process of being broken in by Fleury either before the injury or close to his return, Marc-Andre then chose to go with the all-white instead, sporting the all-yellows of this model on ice for the last time during practice the day before the 2008 NHL Winter Classic, wearing his already broken in and heavily used set and not these.
