Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024

Born and raised in Montreal and growing up playing baseball with the sons of Montreal Canadiens star Maurice Richard, Ron Fournier would begin his career in reffing at the age of 19 and go on to work four (4) years in the World Hockey Association and ten (10) years in the National Hockey League. Also working in the rough and tumble North American Hockey League in the mid-1970s, Fournier was also offered a role in the 1977 cult classic hockey film "Slap Shot" but turned the role down as not to encourage violence and fights in professional sports. Offered here, we present this WHA referee's jersey worn by Fournier that dates from the mid-1970s. A rare Gerry Cosby made offering that features red and white stripes to the body and sleeves as well as knitted blue cuffs and collar, a Gerry Cosby label is affixed to the inner collar of the quarter-zip style garment, with the zipper on the front still functional. Measuring out to roughly a size "42" and having had a plush chenille WHA league crest added over the left breast, "Fournier" is spelt out in dual layer red-over-white tackle twill letters across the affixed blue twill nameplate at the top of the reverse while his number "14" has been added underneath in matching style over a sewn on blue twill circle. Remaining in overall excellent condition with no holes to speak of, pilling is seen throughout both the interior and exterior while a couple of small spot stains are found throughout as well. Additionally, a small red colored board paint transfer mark is observed near the right cuff and there is some sweat staining on the inside of the collar. Hailing from Fournier's personal collection, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
