Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Bringing his superstardom and hockey dominance to the bright lights and sunny skies of Los Angeles for the 1988-89 season due to a trade that summer, Wayne Gretzky would fully cement himself in Hollywood during his first season, registering 168 points in 78 games played, more than enough to claim his ninth Hart Memorial as MVP. Still holding sole ownership or at least a share of 58 NHL records even though it has been 25 years since he last graced the ice of the National Hockey League, offered here is this stick used by Gretzky during the 1988-89 season, his first in sunny California. A Titan TPM 2020 model with “W. Gretzky” stamped to the upper shaft, the stick retains Wayne’s original gripper over the handle/knob while the original black blade tape is still in place around the blade. Showcasing a date stamp reading "048808" over the underside of the lower shaft that translates to August 4th, 1988, a familiar "1-002" pattern stamp is found on the underside near the heel. Displaying with good game-use, marks/abrasions are seen throughout the length of the shaft as well as over the heel, blade and blade tape. Signed by approximately twenty (20) members of the 1988-89 Kings over the forehand side of the shaft in black marker, those that have signed, in addition to Gretzky, include; Tim Watters, John Tonelli, Glenn Healy, Steve Duchesne, Marty McSorley, Luc Robitaille, Paul Fenton, Hubie McDonough, Dean Kennedy, Bob Kudelski, Bobby Carpenter, Dale DeGray, Dave Taylor, Ron Duguay and a few others not able to be made out. All signed in black marker, all those listed above display well and in good condition overall. Hailing from the personal collection of former WHA and NHL referee Ron Fournier, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
