Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
The 6th overall pick of the 1980 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers after playing his junior hockey in the OMJHL with the likes of Kingston, Sault Ste. Marie and Kitchener, Paul Coffey was already a four (4) time Stanley Cup champion when he was donning the red and white uniform of the Detroit Red Wings, colours he would wear for four (4) seasons between 1992-93 and 1995-96. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004, offered here is this stick used by Coffey as a member of the Red Wings in the era of the mid-1990s. A Sher-Wood S.O.P. 5030 model with "Coffey 77" factory graphics over the shaft and an NHL accent sticker still intact and wrapped around the bottom of the shaft, additional graphics reading "Exclusively Handcrafted For Paul Coffey 77" are found on the underside of the shaft as well. Retaining its original black tape job around the shaved down handle and white around the blade with the area of the toe still naked, Coffey has signed over the forehand side with a black marker ink signature that displays well despite fading from age while an annotation reading "To Shakey In Friendship" appears alongside the autograph in matching ink and condition. Exhibiting good game-wear with numerous dark marks and abrasions/chips throughout the entirety of the shaft, lower shaft and heel, puck marks and staining are observed over both sides of the blade tape as well. Originally gifted to former NHLer Mike Walton and displayed in his bar/restaurant, Shakey's, the stick will come accompanied by a Classic Auctions LOA.
