Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Known affectionately as “The Grand Ole Lady of Carlton Street” Maple Leaf Gardens served as the home to the Toronto Maple Leafs between 1931 and 1999, becoming a hockey palace over that 68-year period of time that saw the best of the best play games and do shows within its four walls. Captured here in this beautiful 16” x 20” image of the famous building, with the original taken at some point in the 1990s as it approached its closing, the aerial shot of MLG has been captured at dusk just before total darkness in the sky takes over. Having been signed by approximately twenty-one (21) former Maple Leafs, those that have signed over the image in gold marker ink (all the signatures still display well despite some that have some bleeding around their edges) include; Allen Stanley, Paul Henderson, Norm Ullman, Allan Bester, Rick Vaive, Borje Salming, Darryl Sittler, Wilf Paiement, Wendel Clark, Jim McKenney and many others. Having had a plaque added at the bottom of the display that reads "Hockey Hall of Fame Legends Game - Leaf Alumni vs NHL Legends - Air Canada Centre - Nov. 11, 2001 - Jim McKenny #18", the image has been triple matted and is housed in a simple black frame that shows light-to-moderate wear to the corners and edges. Additionally, also included with the lot is framed shadowbox style display containing items from the 2000 NHL All-Star Game that was hosted in Toronto by the Maple Leafs. Measuring roughly 26" x 22 1/2", the display contains a game puck, pair of game tickets, commemorative patch, an NHL2000 patch, lapel pin and pairs of tickets from both the Saturday Reception at Exhibition Place and NHL All-Star Sunday. Displaying well overall, only light wear is present to the edges and corners of the frame that is worth noting for accuracy.
