Making his official NHL debut with Detroit on Oct 16, 1946 vs Toronto, Gordie Howe scored the Red Wings second goal in the match, and earned a minor penalty during the second period. Prior to his debut, Howe would have taken part in pre-season and exhibition games the Red Wings played before the beginning of the season, and we offer a rare Olympia scorecard from before the start of the 1946-47 season for exhibition games between the Red Wings and one of three other clubs - the Indianapolis Capitals, Omaha Knights or Cleveland Barons. A simple fold-over affair on card stock with Jack Adams pictured on the cover, all four teams rosters are listed including Detroit with Howe, with the actual line-ups for the game to be filled out by hand, which was never done. Considering that Howe signed with Detroit on Oct 8th, and the program advertises tickets for an Oct 11th fight with Sugar Ray Robinson, logically, that leaves only the day Howe signed on the 8th, the 9th and the 10th for when games could have taken place. While the line-up is not filled out, it is almost a guarantee that Howe would have played in any and all preseason/exhibition matches, especially considering he had just signed with the club. To find any item associated with the very genesis of Mr. Hockey's time with the Red Wings is truly a miracle. The scorecard exhibits some minor handling wear with a tiny tear at the bottom of the spine.
