Founded in 1947 as the club to represent the Soviet aircraft industry, Krylya Sovetov Moscow, based in Moscow, Russia and translating to "Soviet Wings", was named after the ANT-9 aircraft that was known as the "Wings of the Soviets. Going on to win a pair of USSR championships in 1957 and 1974 as well as the IIHF European Cup in 1975 and Spengler Cup in 1979, the club possesses an alumni list that includes key contributors to the Soviet Union National Team such as Lebedev, Anisin and Bodunov among others. Offered here, we present this vintage Krylya Sovetov Moscow (Soviet Wings) #9 jersey that is attributed to have been worn by Alexander Guryev circa 1977.
Coming with an eyebrow raising backstory, the jersey was originally obtained by Lou Vairo, a 2014 inductee into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame who was head coach of the United States men's junior team at five (5) IIHF World U20 Championships, and the United States men's team at four (4) Ice Hockey World Championships plus the 1984 Winter Olympics, he also served as an advance scout for the United States gold medal team at the 1980 Winter Olympics, and was an assistant coach on the United States silver medal team at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Not able to remember exactly when he received the jersey or who from, the jersey was consigned to us by former NHLer Aaron Broten, who received the jersey in the early-1980s as a gift from Vairo, a fact that Vairo himself confirmed to us.
A wool construction garment that is void of any labeling on the interior, the jersey measures out to roughly a modern size "40". A classic tie-neck style offering that is decorated over the front with a red felt Krylya Sovetov Moscow team crest, the reverse of the jersey features the number "9" in dual layer style, administered in red satin over blue felt. Through research, we were able to conclusively determine that this style of sweater was worn by the club during the 1976-77 season with Alexander Guryev being listed in multiple game programs from various points of the season as having worn the #9, the same number seen on the sweater being offered. Displaying game-wear in the form of heavy pilling on both the exterior and interior of the piece as well as sweat staining around the collar, red and blue colour bleeding throughout, spot staining over the front and both sleeves plus a pair of stick marks over the hem, it is also worth noting that the ends of both cuffs are heavily ripped/tattered. An all-important artifact that originated from behind the Iron Curtain, don't miss out on this one!
