Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/26/2024
Serving the game of hockey in a number of capacities after his HOF playing career ended, Percy LeSueur began as an NHL referee in the late-1910s, followed by coaching and managing. In 1930, LeSueur and partners purchased the Hamilton Tigers IHL franchise and moved it to Syracuse, New York, where he functioned as head coach for the 1930–31 season, but replaced himself mid-season with Frank Foyston. LeSueur also managed the Syracuse Arena. This rare typed letter on "Syracuse Professional Hockey Club" letterhead has been signed by the legendary keeper. At 8 1/2" x 11", dated Oct 6, 1930, and addressed to the sports editor of the Cleveland Plaindealer newspaper, the text discusses the invitation from LeSueur to come to a Stars game, as he mentions the Syracuse Coliseum, home of the Stars, is a state of the art venue. He has signed in fountain pen ink, with the signature displaying beautifully, but shows some lightening occurring over the intervening century. The letter itself exhibits minimal wear with expected fold lines. A small 4" x 9 1/4" photo of the Coliseum mentioned in the letter is also included. Elected to the HOF in 1961, LeSueur passed away in 1962. Utterly scarce, this is only the sixth LeSueur signature we have offered in 25 years. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
