This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
One of the most popular collectibles of the Original Six era, Bee Hive hockey player photos produced by the St. Lawrence Starch Co. were a staple for Canadian youth/hockey fans, with this large lot encompassing a greater than 20-year period of NHL history. Up for grabs here and sure to pique the interest of many, we present this collection of Bee Hive Group 2 (1945-64) and Group 3 (1964-67) hockey photos totaling 165. Made up of 139 Group 2’s and 26 Group 3’s, all six (6) NHL teams of the era are represented throughout. Starting with the Group 2’s, the breakdown of teams are as follows, with key players noted: Boston - sixteen (16) including Terry Sawchuk, Andy Hebenton, Jack Caffery (photo has surface wear and defects), Johnny Bucyk and Fern Flaman as well as Hal Laycoe and Jerry Toppazzini, both of which seem to be on replacement backings, Chicago - twenty (20) including Forbes Kennedy, Chico Maki (script over stick), Hank Ciesla, Al Rollins (horizontal), Stan Mikita and Glenn Hall as well as Gus Mortson, which has had his photo reglued to the backing with some damage to the top left corner, Detroit - twenty-seven (27) including Glenn Hall, Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Larry Hillman (photo has some surface wear and small fold on lower left edge), John Bucyk, Al Arbour, Vis Stasiuk (home jersey with blade), Doug Barkley (partial blade) and Bob Goldham, who has had his photo reglued to the backing, Montreal - thirty-five (35) including Red Berenson (black script - has a long stain top to bottom), Maurice Richard, Jacques Plante, Henri Richard, Gump Worsley and Doug Harvey, who's photo has some writing on the lower portion of the backing while five (5) other photos have had their backings cut at an angle on every corner, New York - eighteen (18) including Jacques Plante, Doug Harvey, Don Marshall, Rod Gilbert, Gump Worsley, Andy Bathgate and Harry Howell, which has punch holes at the left edge of his backing, plus an additional seven (7) photos that have had their backings cut at an angle on every corner, and finally, Toronto - twenty-three (23) including Dave Keon, George Armstrong, Allan Stanley, Tim Horton, Johnny Bower and Red Kelly, who's image has multiple scratches over it. Moving on to the Group 3's, which account for twenty-six (26) photos in the collection being offered, included are examples of names such as Camille Henry, Bernie Parent, Bobby Hull (2), Phil Esposito and Bruce MacGregor (away jersey) that are worthy of mention. A pleasing grouping with some star power spread throughout and sure to be an excellent start to a budding Bee Hive collection, all the included examples seem to be on their original backings except for those listed otherwise above. Additionally, the cardboard backings are not perfect, as is the case with most Bee Hive collections, with most showing just wear to the corners and in a decent condition overall.
