Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Infrequently offered in quantity, these coveted NHL team crests were premiums offered by the St. Lawrence Starch Company through its popular mail-in program which began in 1934. Proofs of purchase from the company's star product, Bee Hive Golden Corn Syrup, along with its starch products, were sent in, in exchange for photos and other items like these thin cloth "shields" as they were referred to. With four (4) patches included here, the present examples being those of the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple Leafs, each is found to be in pleasing crease free condition and measures 4 1/4" x 3 1/2" while retaining excellent colours overall. Also including a pair of thin paper ads describing how to obtain the crests, with one earlier than the other based on the inclusion of examples for the Montreal Maroons and New York Americans over its front, both measure roughly 4" x 7" with the earlier of the two (2) lighter in colour and sporting fold lines/creases and the other crease free and showing a bit of light discoloration at the bottom. Finally, also included is a quartet of St. Lawrence Starch Company envelopes to round out the lot. Not necessarily the type of envelopes the shield crests were sent in and each measuring roughly 6 1/4" x 5", all sport addresses over their fronts, except for one that has been cut out, as well as art work of the company's plant. All also having been stamped with the acceptable postage, with a couple showing handwritten notations over the fronts, all show handling wear and the usual creases plus edge and corner wear but are free from rips/tears.
