Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
The first football card set to use color images, which were actually colorized versions of the original black and white photos supplied by the participating teams, the “tall-boy” issue is described by author Andy Malycky in “Collecting Canadian Football,” as the crown jewel of vintage Canadian football sets, thanks in part to the presence of many stars and Hall-of-Famers. Long thought to have been available in boxes of Blue Ribbon Tea, the cards were actually issued inside of Blue Ribbon Milk Chocolate candy bars. Offered here, we present this grouping of thirty-one (31) cards from the fabled 1954 Blue Ribbon Tea CFL release. Paced by the key rookie cards of CFL Hall of Fame inductees such as Tom Casey (x2 - one around G to VG with corner wear and a light crease and the other seen as VG to VG-EX that is signed over the lower front with a crisp blue ballpoint pen ink signature), Kaye Vaughan (FR to G - creased), Frank Morris (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear), Bernie Faloney (FR to G - pair of large creases) and Jackie Parker (G to VG - pencil mark at his throat), the group also includes cards of HOFers such as Peter Neumann (G to VG - small corner crease at the top right), Herb Trawick (x2 - one around FR to G with both an eraser and ink mark at the top left on the front and the other seen as EX with slight corner wear) and Virgil Wagner (x2 - both around FR to G due to creasing). For the remaining cards, seven (7) are seen as being in the range of VG-EX to EX, six (6) are around VG to VG-EX, six (6) present as G to VG and one (1) wraps up the group in the scope of PR to F conditon.
