Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024

The second Major League Baseball team to call the great white north of Canada home, the Toronto Blue Jays, playing their first season in the Majors in 1977, would see a marginal improvement during their second (2nd) season of play, winning an additional five (5) games to finish the year at 59-102. Seeing Roy Howell serve as Toronto's representative at the 1978 MLB All-Star Game in San Diego, offered here is this 1978 Toronto Blue Jays vintage prototype jersey. A double-knit polyester construction offering in a pullover style as was common in the era, the jersey is made by Rawlings and sports a brand label that displays a size "46" designation over the front hem along with a fly tag reading "Set 1 1978". A road powder blue style jersey (Wilson made and supplied the white home jerseys in those years), the front is decorated with "TORONTO" in single layer navy blue twill letters while a Blue Jays logo crest in layered tackle twill with chain stitched details has been added in the center of the chest. Of note, the front lettering and crest seen on this jersey is exactly the same as what was used in Toronto's first season of 1977 but final product game jerseys from '78 had "TORONTO" in navy letters that were outlined in white. Accented with knitted blue and white stripped cuffs plus collar, the number "13", worn by Roy Howell during the season, in single layer navy twill that has a space that shows the powder blue fabric base, the actual game jerseys were solid blue with a white outline as well like the letters on the front. Remaining in overall excellent condition with only a couple of light spot stains to make mention of on the reverse, Howell has signed the inside of the jersey with a blue marker ink signature that displays without issue.
