Perhaps the greatest player the game of hockey and the National Hockey League has ever seen, Mario Lemieux needs no introduction and during the 1980s and 1990s was the only one capable of holding a candle with the likes of Wayne Gretzky and his greatness. Returning to the Pittsburgh lineup during the 2000-01 campaign after retiring three (3) years earlier, Lemieux followed up his 76 points in 43 games played with 31 points in 24 games played in 2001-02, missing time due to nagging injuries and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games where he captained Team Canada to their first Olympic gold medal in fifty (50) years. An inductee of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and finally retiring from the National Hockey League for good following the 2005-06 campaign, offered here is this photo-matched Penguins jersey worn by Lemieux during the 2001-02 campaign. Made by Koho, both "Made in Canada" and size "56" labels have been affixed to the inner collar with the first of the two (2) displaying with Lemieux's number "66" penned in faded black marker ink by Penguins equipment staff. Decorated over the front of the jersey with a Penguins team crest that features embroidered details, the distinguished captain's "C" has been added over the left breast. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Lemieux's famed number "66" in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals, "Lemieux" is spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Still sporting the original fight strap on the interior as well as evidence of numerous washings, the jersey, likely Lemieux's "Set 2" specimen wore for a total of three (3) games, displays with just very light game-wear in the form of a couple light stick marks over the area of the right elbow and a small unrepaired cut over the left forearm. Also showing a few loose threads and pilling at the right elbow/armpit on the interior, the jersey has been photo-matched with the image of Lemieux that is seen over the front of his 2002-03 Topps Stadium card #6 to the placement of the numbers on the reverse, the loose black thread coming into the grey section at the bottom of his right shoulder, the small stick mark at the top of the yellow stipe on the right sleeve underneath the first "6" and to loose threads coming of the "L", "E" and "U" in "Lemieux" at the top of the reverse.
