Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
One of the most important franchises in the National Hockey League and a charter member of the league all the way back in 1917, the Toronto Maple Leafs have claimed a total of thirteen (13) Stanley Cups over the course of their 107 year history and have had more Hockey Hall of Fame inductees than any other franchise. Offered here, we present this Toronto Maple Leafs jersey that dates to the circa the 1973-74 season and is attributed to have been worn by five (5) time Stanley Cup champion and 1972 Team Canada member Eddie Johnston. A heavyweight durene construction offering made by Rawlings, a brand label displaying a size "50" designation is affixed to the inner collar along with a Rawlings washing instructions label also. Decorated over the front of the jersey with a screened on Port Colborne Sailors Oldtimers team crest that was added after the jersey was recycled to them, the outline/placement of the original Maple Leafs crest that would have had "Toronto Maple Leafs" embroidered into it is still easily able to be made out on both the interior and exterior of the shirt. Sporting matching Maple Leafs alternate logo crests over both shoulders, the sleeves and verso have been styled with the number "1" in single layer tackle twill numerals. Never having had a nameplate added over the top of the reverse and void of a fight strap on the interior, the jersey is also missing its original lace that was once fed through the collar. Having been hemmed up/shortened at the bottom of the jersey, done after it's days in the National Hockey League, the jersey shows use via puck marks over the front and both sleeves as well as a pair of team repairs over the left forearm. Also showing staining throughout, which is heaviest over the shoulders, there is light fabric rubbing and a tiny hole on the inside of the left sleeve, a small red post paint transfer mark over the area of the right elbow and pilling on the interior.
Regarding the photo-reference, the photo is referenced to a December 23rd, 1973 image showing Johnston and the Maple Leafs taking on the Bruins at the Boston Garden which appears to show a match to the loose blue thread at the bottom of the "1" on the right sleeve. Also appearing to show similarities to the size/spacing of the elbow reinforcement stitching over the right elbow, the image is not clear enough to call a definitive photo-match.
