Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/1/2024
Seeking to capitalize on the success of the St Lawrence Starch Company’s Beehive hockey picture promotion, the Canada Starch Company responded with its set of similar thin-stock black and white sepia tone pictures (4 3/8” x 6 3/8”) affixed to larger, colourful card stock mounts (6 5/8” x 8 5/8”). The promotion would run from 1935 to 1940, with the set complete at 68. Offered here, we present this near complete set of the desirable hockey photographs that includes forty-seven (47) of the sixty-eight (68) pictures that make up the set. Displaying rather well throughout but not without flaw, it is important to note that majority of the pictures have a small handwritten letter or number on the bottom edge of the actual pictures themselves while the beige backings are all showing some shelf wear and light staining with some backings showing more than others. Including a group of ten (10) photos that features the likes of HOFers Howie Morenz, Aurele Joliat, Toe Blake, Babe Siebert, Ace Bailey, Roy Worters, Frank Boucher, Marty Barry, Carl Voss and Cy Wentworth. Of note, out of those ten (10) the Morenz, Blake, Siebert, Bailey, Boucher and Barry pictures seem to have been re-glued to the beige backings while the Bailey picture has heavy creases while others show a variety of things including ceasing to the backings, edge and corner wear/dings and stains/glue residue. With the second group of photos, all of which don't seem to have been reglued to the their backings, including players such 52-Trottier, 53-Blinco, 63-Kelly, 69-Burke, 81-McGill Jr., 82-March, 113-Buswell, 114-Mackenzie, 120-Shields, 123-Shannon, 154-Ward, 155-Evans, 198-Sands, 199-Bourque and 200-Young, all are in visually appealing condition for the most part with some showing light-to-moderate wear/dings to the edge/corners of the backings as well as some light creasing and small light spot stains in areas as well. Finally, for the last group, all of which seem to have been reglued to their backings, included are the examples of 51-Northcott, 56-Marker, 59-Gagnon, 60-Mantha, 61-Haynes, 62-Barry, 64-Kerr (completely loose from backing), 67-Lesieur, 80-Jenkins, 109-Desilets (trimmed), 115-Lepine, 116-Goupille, 117-Lorrain (backing has punch holes), 118-Drouin (backing has punch holes), 122-Beveridge, 124-Smith, 125-Mondou, 152-Cain, 153-Gracie, 156-Trudel, 196-Robinson and 197-Getliffe (completely loose from backing). Again, in the third grouping, many of the included images show many of the flaws previously listed above. A fabulous near-complete assembly, the group is missing only those of #'s 49, 50, 54, 55, 58, 70, 71, 72, 76, 77, 78, 106, 107, 111, 119, 121, 151 and 201 as well as the photos of the 1936-37 Montreal Maroons, 1935-36 Montreal Canadiens and 1936 Canadian Olympic Team for completion.
