Dave Stieb entered the record books on September 2nd 1990 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium vs the Cleveland Indians. It had taken him two hours and 27 minutes, and 123 pitches, to make personal and team history, with Pat Borders being the first to congratulate him before the entire team hoisted Stieb onto their shoulders. It is the opinion of our consignor that this is the jersey that Borders was wearing when he caught Dave Stieb’s first no-hitter in Blue Jays history. We have not yet been able to find a clear enough photo of Borders from the September 2nd 1990 game to confirm it is the jersey. But, video stills taken from the game show consistencies with the button placement and the position of the wording "TORONTO" in relation to the front seam and also to the buttons and the Blue Jays crest. A Toronto Blue Jays sixth round draft choice in 1982, catcher Pat Borders is a two-time World Series champion with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992 and 1993 and was the Most Valuable Player of the 1992 World Series. We have a jersey worn by the Columbus (Ohio) native in 1990, his third year with the club, a season that witnessed a .286 batting average with 15 home runs, 99 hits and 49 RBIs. The grey button-front jersey has a Wilson size 42 tag affixed to the left front tail and there is a "10 90 2" date/set swatch in the collar. Styled with "Toronto" arching over the chest in dual-color tackle twill, there is also a partially embroidered Blue Jays team crest below it. The sweater has been accented with "10" on verso in matching material along with "Borders" in single blue twill. The back of the jersey is signed by Borders in blue marker "Pat Borders, Game Used, 90" and the autograph is nice, clean and bold. Game wear includes sweat stains to the inner collar with more showing on the lower inner portion of the button-front. There are a number of red transfer marks in the middle front area of the jersey with a few small scattered game marks/stains on various areas of the sweater and the sleeve cuffs are slightly faded. Originally said to have been acquired from Pat Borders directly in 2018 and originally hailing from his personal collection, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
