The first African-born NHL player, Olaf Kolzig would tend the twine in 719 National Hockey League contests over the course of his career that spanned from 1989-90 to 2008-09, cementing himself as one of the league's top goalies by winning the Vezina Trophy for the 1999-2000 season, also earning Hart Memorial Trophy votes the same year as well. Owning a large number of Washington Capitals career franchise records for goalies including most games played (711), most career wins (301) and most shutouts (35), offered here is this stick used by "Olie the Goalie" as a member of the Capitals in the early-2000s. A CCM Heaton 8 model twig from either the 2000-01 and 2001-02 regular seasons or 2002 pre-season, "O Kolzig" is stamped to the upper shaft along with a date stamp that is now too faded to make out. Retaining its original tape job of white cloth wrapped around the handle/knob that has been finished at the bottom with a ring of clear, black tape has been added over both the entirety of blade and heel areas while more white grip tape has been added over the hand grip. Exhibiting game-use via puck marks over both sides of the blade tape and paddle, the upper shaft shows some chipping and other abrasions/small missing pieces of wood around the edges while small spots of red post paint transfers exist over the reverse side of the upper shaft and forehand side of the paddle. A bit tacky on the bottom and top edges of the blade, the stick remains free of any major cracks or breaks and is ready for display.
