Found in O-Pee-Chee packs that contained 14 cards and that cost kids/collectors 20 cents during the 1979-80 season were blue-bordered cards like these, with that of Wayne Gretzky surely coveted by season’s end as the scrawny teenage whiz kid from Brantford, Ontario proved he could “play with the big boys”…and how! Nobody totaled more points than Wayne and now no other hockey rookie card carries more appeal among the hobby’s masses than iconic #18, offered here after receiving a mark of FP 1 at KSA headquarters. Retaining overall good colours and solid centering, the card sports many creases including at three (3) of the four (4) corners and through the middle while the edges and corners also show a few dings/wear as well. For the accompanying 395 cards, found to be in the overall condition range of VG throughout for the most part with many showing corner wear, the team checklist cards found between #244 and #261 in the checklist are all unmarked except for #244 (Atlanta) and #259 (Vancouver). For the key cards, included are those of 40-Salming (VG to VG-EX - wear to top right corner), 125-Clarke (GOOD - off-center and dings to top two corners), 131-Checklist (FR to G - unmarked and creased), 150-Dryden (FR to G - corner wear/dings and small creases), 175-Howe (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), 185-Hull (VG to VG-EX - bottom border is off-center), 200-Lafleur (G to VG - possible pinhole/surface bubble), 230-Bossy (EX_to EX-MT), 237-Checklist (EX - unmarked but faded surface) and 346-Checklist (FR to G - unmarked, crease and dent in the middle). Additionally, all the other stars are found to be in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set. With the Gretzky securely housed in a KSA holder that remains in overall good condition, the lucky winning bidder will be pleased with this iconic assembly.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
