Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
The first goaltender to abandon the traditional cricket-style goal pads, opting for the wider, modern style pads first produced by Hamilton harness maker Pop Kenesky, HOFer Alec Connell was also the first netminder to record a 30–win season. This 1934-35 Sweet Caporal photo was originally part of the 48 picture set presented by Imperial Tobacco and inserted into Canadiens and Maroons programs at the Montreal Forum. Measuring approx 6 3/4" x 9 3/4", on fairly thin stock, and free of any trimming - a common trait usually found with surviving examples, Connell is pictured in his Maroons wool, with a facsimile signature beneath. There is a vertical crease that runs from top-to-bottom, as the program it originally was inserted in was most likely folded to fit into one's pocket, there are a few other minor surface marks along with a couple pinholes, with the premium displaying quite well overall.
