the fourth baseball card set released by Topps, the company's 1956 release featured a total of 340 base cards and two non-numbered checklists. Building on their success with dual-image cards in previous years, Topps upped the ante by positioning the player profile picture in the foreground against a color action scene in the background. The design really worked and remains one of the most attractive and highly sought after baseball card sets to this day. Lacking any real prominent rookie cards, the set is still found to be loaded with stars, fan favorites and many Hall of Fame members while Topps incorporated several new elements into the checklist and product configuration for the set, including the aforementioned checklist cards, cards for the American League and National League presidents and finally, team-specific cards that provided a detailed look at the sixteen (16) MLB teams of the time. Finally, in addition to the beautifully crafted card front, the 1956 Topps Baseball card backs supplies a cornucopia of information regarding the player, including statistical and biographical information for kids and other collectors to comb through.
Offered here, we present this high-grade starter set of the 1956 Topps Baseball release that includes 137 of the 340 cards in the checklist with all those that are included having been graded by either SGC or PSA. Paced by key star-power offerings of Mickey Mantle (SGC NM 7), Roberto Clemente (SGC NM 7), Luis Aparicio RC (PSA NM 7) and Sandy Koufax (PSA NM 7), other notable high-end cards included feature the likes of Al Rosen (SGC NM 7), Monte Irvin (SGC NM+ 7.5), George Kell (SGC NM+ 7.5), Larry Doby (SGC NM 7), Eddie Mathews (PSA NM 7), Robin Roberts (PSA NM 7), Bob Lemon (PSA NM 7) and Roger Craig (PSA NM 7) with all housed in older style holders from either company that remain in good condition despite evidence of handling and age through scratches and scuffs. For the remaining cards included that make up the rest of the assembly, for cards #'d 1 to 99, the group includes a total of forty-six (46) examples with thirty-six (36) being SGC-graded and ten (10) being PSA-graded offerings with the breakdown of grades being; SGC NM-MT 8 (11), SGC NM+ 7.5 (16), SGC NM 7 (9) and PSA NM 7 (10). For cards #'d 100 to 199, the group includes a total of thirty-eight (38) examples with thirty-three (33) being SGC-graded and five (5) PSA-graded offerings with the breakdown of grades being SGC NM-MT 8 (13), SGC NM+ 7.5 (13), SGC NM 7 (7) and PSA NM 7 (5). For cards #'d 200 to 299, the group includes a total of forty (40) examples with thirty-three (33) being SGC-graded and seven (7) PSA-graded offerings with the breakdown of grades being SGC NM-MT 8 (9), SGC NM+ 7.5 (12), SGC NM 7 (12) and PSA NM 7 (7).
