Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
A teenage Wayne Gretzky is pictured here on one of his desirable early collectibles, a 1977-79 Sportscaster card that pictures Gretzky over the front during his days with the Oilers as part of the rival league, the World Hockey Association. With Sportscaster cards originally designed to be educational, for those unaware of Gretzky’s early pro career, the reverse offers a terrific summary, informing of how the young phenom cracked the millionaires’ club at an early age, of his signing with the WHA’s Indianapolis Racers, his sale to the Edmonton Oilers and the contract he signed with Peter Pocklington – interesting reading! Somewhat comical over 40 years later is how the write-up begins: “The economics of sports has sent salary scales zooming, but most players have to perform for a while before cracking the millionaires’ club.” Wayne’s performance with the Oilers, Kings, Blues and Rangers, along with the fact that his Sportcaster issue is a type of “high number” (Series 77), make for a not-enough-supply-for-demand piece. Measuring approximately 4-5/8” by 6-1/4” and produced on thin card stock, the offered example presents in the condition range of GOOD due to a crease in the middle of the card that extends in from the left side as well as a scratch that is observed in the surface just above Gretzky's head. If you’ve been hoping to add this prerequisite to your important Gretzky shrine, now’s your chance to click, click or tap, tap….and score!
