Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
A goaltending great of the pre-war era, George Hainsworth had been traded to Toronto just before appearing on this rookie card, surely pleasing his new employers by leading the NHL in wins in 1933-34 and '34-35. It must have been a case of what have you done for me lately that landed Hainsworth in Toronto. He had been a three-time Vezina Trophy winner in Montreal and backstopped the Canadiens to back-to-back Stanley Cups but dropped to 18-25-5 in '32-33, prompting a deal for Toronto's Lorne Chabot. This Hainsworth card is graded a VG-EX 4 by the graders at SGC.
A member of the Maple Leafs' first Stanley Cup-winning squad a couple of years earlier and later a five-time Cup champ as coach of the blue and white, Hap Day was in his tenth pro season in Toronto when this card was issued by Toronto's Canadian Chewing Gum Sales Limited. This Day card is graded a VG-EX 4 by the graders at SGC.
