Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

A wonderful image of a hockey icon on the front and an intriguing write-up on the back of this Eddie Shore card is the work of the Goudey Gum Company, with the firm's "Sport Kings" issue of 1933-34 paying tribute to the world's top athletes of the era. Four hockey subjects (Shore, Howie Morenz, Ace Bailey, and Ching Johnson) were featured in the 48-card multi-sport set. Shore is described on the reverse as "one of the highest scoring defense players in the game and always gives a thrill when he starts one of his famous "rushes" down the ice. Is one of the highest priced stars in hockey, but is very modest and quiet." We can add that the Bruins' legend was voted the NHL's Most Valuable Player and Hart Trophy winner four times during the 1930s and that no other d-man in history, not even Bobby Orr, has ever duplicated that feat. This card is graded a VG-EX 4 by the graders at SGC.
The classic pose of four-time NHL MVP Eddie Shore graces this desirable OPC Series "D" card, which has received EX 5 status from the PSA company. Part of the short bio on the back reveals the legendary Shore, who stood 5'10" and reads, "Always a big threat on the attack." Eddie will be an important addition to a big-time graded pre-war portfolio. Graded a VG 3 by the graders at SGC.
