Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

The 1996-97 Detroit Red Wings ended the Motor City's Stanley Cup drought at 42 years when they reached the NHL summit, launching a modern dynasty. Led by Conn Smythe winner Mike Vernon, the Red Wings posted a 16-4 mark in the playoffs, including four-game sweeps of Anaheim in the second round and Philadelphia in the Cup final. We have a gorgeous Stanley Cup trophy, with this unawarded example, produced by Boffey, similar to the examples awarded to each member of the Red Wings by the NHL in a tradition dating back to 1958. Vernon, who won his first Stanley Cup with Calgary in 1989, has his name engraved on this approximately 13-inch tall silver-plated grail along with captain Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Brendan Shanahan, Igor Larionov, Larry Murphy, Vladimir Konstantinov, Kris Draper, Viacheslav Fetisov, Tomas Holmstrom, Joe Kocur, Vyacheslav Kozlov, Martin Lapointe, Kirk Maltby, Darren McCarty, Chris Osgood, Bob Rouse, Tomas Sandstrom, Jamie Pushor, Tim Taylor, Aaron Ward, Doug Brown, Mathieu Dandenault and Kevin Hodson. Owners Mike and Marian Ilitch and head coach Scotty Bowman are among the team executives engraved above the players, just beneath, "DETROIT RED WINGS, 1996-97", on the face of the barrel of this magnificent trophy. In beautiful condition, the trophy sports just light wear in spots, displaying brilliantly overall.
