Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/1/2024
Boasting a checklist of 752-cards, the 1971 baseball card set produced by O-Pee-Chee set mirrors Topps' American version though the cards from the Canadian company weren't cut as precisely as the Topps issuance and therefore the card borders are often found frayed. Condition sensitive due to the black coloured borders that are often found chipped, the set is far rarer than the Topps set from the same year and is anchored by such stars and future Hall of Famers as Hank Aaron, Sparky Anderson MGR, Luis Aparicio, Johnny Bench, Bert Blyleven, Lou Brock, Steve Carlton, Roberto Clemente, Reggie Jackson, Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew, Willie Mays, Jim Palmer, Tony Perez, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver and Carl Yastrzemski as well as Rich Allen, Dusty Baker, Steve Garvey, Denny McLain, Thurman Munson, Boog Powell and Pete Rose. Displaying both French and English on the reverses, offered here is this complete assembly of O-Pee-Chee's 1971 baseball card release. A tough set to complete with the contingent being offered here found to be in the overall average condition range of G to VG with some a bit better off and found to be in the scope of VG to VG-EX, it is also noteworthy that some low-grade cards are found in the group as well. For the key cards, included are the likes of 5-Munson (G to VG - corners and off-center), 20-Jackson (VG to VG-EX - 80-20 centering), 26-Blyleven RC (VG-EX to EX - 90-10 centering), 50-McCovey (VG-EX to EX - slight corner wear), 100-Rose (GOOD - water stain), 160-Seaver (VG to VG-EX - faded/image out of focus), 180-Kaline (VG-EX to EX - light corner wear), 210-Carew (G to VG - corner dings), 230-Stargell (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear), 250-Bench (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear), 300-B. Robinson (GOOD - left border ding), 341-Garvey RC (G to VG - print mark at the bottom right), 400-Aaron (GOOD - off-center and a bend at the top right), 513-Ryan ("AUTHENTIC" - ALTERED - bottom right has black marker on it to cover a worn corner), 525-Banks (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), 530-Yastrzemski (VG to VG-EX - 90-10 centering), 535-Flood (G to VG - short print - corner wear and off-center), 550-Killebrew (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear), 560-Staub (FR to G - short print - worn), 570-Palmer (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), 580-Perez (G to VG - corner wear and off-center from top-to-bottom), 600-Mays (GOOD - crease), 625-Brock (GOOD - corners and off-center), 630-Clemente (GOOD - corners), 640-F. Robinson (PR to FR - worn throughout), 650-Allen (G to VG - short print - corner wear), 658-Lindblad (VG to VG-EX - short print - light corner wear), 674-Expos Team (GOOD - short print - small crease), 700-Powell (VG to VG-EX - short print - corner wear), 709-Baker/Baylor RC (G to VG - short print - surface wear) and 750-McLain (FR to G - short print - worn throughout). For the checklist cards, all are found in their original unmarked state except for that of #54 and also #369, which has one box checked off. A classic O-Pee-Chee set depicting the era’s boys of summer for you to contemplate.
