Meeting Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk and the Detroit Red Wings in the 1953 Stanley Cup semifinals, the Boston Bruins battled for six games and emerged victorious, advancing to the final against the mighty Montreal Canadiens. Game 4 of the series was played on March 31st, with the Bruins defeating the Wings 6-2, on the strength of goals by Ed Sanford (2), Jack McIntyre (2), Dave Creighton and Milt Schmidt. This team-signed Art Ross Tyer NHL puck was used in the match apparently by Ed Sanford to score one of his goals. One side has the rubberized Art Ross NHL logo, with three pieces of small period tape across the surface, with the handwritten text to include "Sandford got goal with this puck 4th game 6-2 against Detroit", "1951-52 Boston won against Detroit to qualify for Stanley Cup" and "Canadiens defeated Boston to take Cup. This puck went to Detroit with Jack Crawford" (the 1951-52 date is an obvious error, as all the particulars match the 1952-53 season). The reverse of the puck is also covered in period tape, with approx 20 Bruins signatures in ink, and we should note that each signature was later traced over. Signers include Labine, Sullivan, Armstrong, Patrick, Creighton, Mackell, Schmidt, Henry, Klukay, Dumart, Toppazzini, Crawford and others. Two small pieces of paper also accompany the puck, including one that is personalized to two individuals along with "With Best Wishes - Fleming Mackell".
