Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/1/2024
Fifteen players from each of the four American-based teams is what the deciders at Topps decided on when planning the company’s first hockey card set, with the artistic renditions and vivid popping colors making the 1954-55 set an all-time classic. Found here in partial set form with thirty-seven (37) of the sixty (60) cards making up the checklist present and accounted for with all the included cards having been amplified even further by the fact that each has been signed by the player featured over the front. Including a total of thirty-eight (38) cards (there is a duplicate of card #22 picturing Wally Hergesheimer with one of the two cards having had an "A" drawn over the breast), the included cards are found in a variety of grade ranges ranging from as low as POOR and as high as VERY GOOD. Missing twenty-three (23) cards for a complete set, including #'s 1, 6, 7, 8-Howe, 10-Worsley, 12, 13, 14, 17, 26, 31, 32, 37, 38, 40, 41-Stanley, 44, 46, 49, 50, 54, 58-Sawchuk and 59, the photos on the listing will picture all of the cards included with the lot. All having been signed with either black or blue marker or ballpoint pen ink signatures that display without issue, it is worth pointing out that a couple of the autographs signed in ballpoint pen do show some light fading from age. Including key cards of deceased/still with us HOFers such as; 3-Howell (VG - crease along the bottom), 5-Kelly (PR - multiple creases and well rounded corners), 11-Bathgate (PR - multiple creases and well rounded corners), 20-Gadsby (FR to G - small creases, wear and rounded corners), 25-Flaman (FR to G - creases, wear and rounded corners), 27-Pronovost (GOOD - small creases, wear and rounded corners), 39-Delvecchio (PR - multiple creases, wear and rounded corners), 51-Lindsay (PR - multiple creases, wear and rounded corners), 56-Laprade (FR to G - small creases, wear and rounded corners plus pen marks in the lower right hand corner) and 60-Schmidt (PR - multiple creases, wear and rounded corners). Overall, a thought provoking grouping worthy of a home in your vintage portfolio!
