Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Having been signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs organization in 1948, Tim Horton, not yet the coffee and donut mogul that most Canadians know him to be, broke into the National Hockey League full-time with the blue and white during the 1952-53 season, posting 16 points in 70 games played during the year. Looking to establish some family roots in the city he was employed in, offered here is this framed display that includes a handwritten letters sent from Horton to Maple Leafs President and Managing Director, Conn Smythe, asking him for his assistance and opinion on purchasing a house in Toronto. Dated March 28th, 1953, six (6) days after the end of the regular season in which the Leafs failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the two (2) page letter has been penned by Horton in elegant blue ballpoint pen ink and signed by him at its conclusion with a rookie era signature that displays without issue. Talking about the need for a letter proving his salary to show to the real estate agents as well as where he would be spending his off-season in the meantime, the display also includes a letter outlining the details of the houses that Horton and his wife could have possibly been considering that is addressed to Smythe and dated April 1st, 1953 while an additional letter, this one from Smythe secretary, informing him that he does not think he should purchase one of the listed houses and instead return to Toronto to talk to him because of his "considerable experience with houses" and his "good position to let you know whether or not you are getting good value for your money" that is dated March 30th, 1953. Also showcasing a copy of Horton's 1953-54 Parkhurst card that has been graded as a GOOD 2 as well as a JSA Letter of Authenticity authenticating the signature on the letter signed by Horton himself, all the pieces are displayed under a simple white matte in a simple black frame that remains in good condition and shows only some light wear to the corners and edges from handling plus display. Of note, the pieces contained within the frame have been affixed to it using clear plastic tape and is worth noting for accuracy.
