Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

This simply elegant gold and diamond ring was issued to a member of the 1950-51 Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs! Very possibly a player's ring, this is indeed one of the original commemorative baubles presented to all of the champion Leafs, including staff members and team executives. The Maple Leafs did not issue these rings with any names engraved on them so it is entirely possible that this ring belonged to one of the likes of immortals such as Broda, Bentley and Watson, or any one of their illustrious teammates. The Maple Leafs won their sixth Cup in a 10-year span in the spring of 1951, beating the Canadiens in five games in an amazing Stanley Cup final that saw each game decided in overtime. The ill-fated Bill Barilko gave Toronto its fourth Cup in five years when he beat Gerry McNeil in Game 5 at Maple Leaf Gardens. A shimmering 65-point diamond is set in the middle of a maple leaf on the face of the ring which is surrounded by a blue enamel horseshoe shape with "Maple Leafs World Champions" in gold letters with "1950-51" in raised gold along the bottom of the tableau. The shanks feature art deco-style accents and "Birks 10K" is stamped inside the size 10 band, with a weight of 10 grams. This fantastic gold and diamond championship ring remains in magnificent condition overall, with very little wear to the nicely-defined "1950-51" season's gold lettering on the face. Expected scratches and minor marks are only apparent on close examination. An amazing collector's item honoring one of the Maple Leafs' greatest Stanley Cup wins!
