Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/1/2024
Coaching the University of Toronto Hockey Team - known as the Varsity Grads - for a number of seasons during the mid-1920s before taking over the Maple Leafs, Conn Smythe led the grads to the 1927 Allan Cup championship, with the club also chosen to represent Canada at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St Moritz, where they went undefeated and won gold. Offered here, we present this silver plated water pitcher present to Smythe by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Jr's in 1924. Historically having run a junior team for students and a senior team for graduates, the pitcher stands approximately 8" tall and is engraved with "“Conny Smythe From Varsity Juniors ’24.” over the front. In the Smythe family for over 80 years before its initial sale, the piece is in excellent condition with a small, barely noticeable dent on the front, near the engraving while displaying with some tarnishing and patina throughout the interior and exterior that could be removed if one desired to return it to its original splendor. A letter of authenticity will accompany the piece.
