A city with a long and rich history of hockey tradition that dates back to the 1870s when James Creighton, the organizer of the first indoor ice hockey contest in 1875, moved to Ottawa and helped develop the game while working as a law clerk for the Senate chamber of the Parliament of Canada. With the Ottawa Hockey Club helping form the Ontario Hockey Association in 1890 and inspiring Lord Stanley to donate what is now known as the Stanley Cup in 1893, Ottawa teams claimed the modest silver bowl eleven (11) times between 1903 and 1927. Played by all ages at all levels throughout its history, offered here is this gorgeous vintage 1920's Ottawa Journal Interdepartmental Hockey Championship Trophy that was presented to championship teams made up of players representing various departments within the operations of the once thriving newspaper. Measuring 17 3/4" tall in total height with the trophy itself measuring 13 3/4" tall and mounted on a 4" tall wooden base, the trophy sports handles on either side that extend from top-to-bottom and is engraved with "Ottawa Journal Interdepartmental Hockey Championship" on one side in an elegant style script. Claimed by the Editorial Department in both 1923 and 1924 before the Night Mechanical Department won the prize in 1925 and 1926, the names, players and years of the championship squads are all engraved on the opposite side of the piece. Remaining in overall lovely condition with some wear to the silver plating seen throughout via tarnishing and patina, the trophy shows some small scratches and nicks throughout but appears to be free from obvious dents and dings. Able to rotate freely on the wooden base that shows some wear around the edges but is overall pleasing condition as well, the piece is sure to a make handsome addition to any trophy display.
