Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Designed to protect a players main facial extremity in the early rough and tumble game of collegiate football, we offer a desirable circa 1890s Morrill football nose guard. Designed to be worn over the nose with a head strap to hold the protective equipment in place, the wearer would bite down on the mouth section while holes allowed breathing through the nose. "Morrill's Patent Nose Mask" appears along the top in embossed letters, with a crack at the top of the bridge, along with a "K" that has been carved into the surface. The mouth portion shows use with minor soiling, with the original strap fully intact. Highly collectible for gridiron specialists, the contraption went out of fashion as the sport while still in it's infancy, with any surviving examples quite rare.
