Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Captained by Bill Cook and featuring a lineup that included the likes of ten (10) future Hockey Hall of Fame inductees on the ice as well as another behind the bench, the 1935-36 edition of the New York Rangers finished with a record of 19-17-12, finishing fourth (4th) in the National Hockey League's American Division. Offered here, is this team-signed mini-stick that features the autographs of 20 players and staff of that years team. Measuring 24" in length, the natural wooden coloured stick has been painted black over the blade to simulate tape while "New York Rangers" has been written over the shaft on one side in pencil. Signed by Howie Morenz with a black fountain pen ink signature at the bottom of the shaft on the side that reads "New York Rangers", joining the signature of the "Stratford Streak" on the same side are those of Lester Patrick and Joe Cooper, both of whom have signed near the top of the stick in pencil. On the reverse, Rangers trainer Harry Westerly and the team's mascot have signed over the heel while moving up the shaft from bottom-to-top shows the pencil autographs of names such as Bun Cook, Ching Johnson, Bert Connelly, Lynn Patrick, Ott Heller, Phil Watson, Dave Kerr, Art Coulter, Frank Boucher, Murray Murdoch, Glenn Brydson, Charley Mason, Bill Cook, Butch Keeling, Vern Ayres and Cecil Dillon. With most of the autographs easily able to be made out despite some that are lighter in areas, it is worth noting that the signature of Morenz has bled a bit due to the nature of the ink spreading throughout the grain of the wooden stick it is signed on and that the stick itself is in excellent condition with just light handing wear observed to the edges. Accompanied by a vintage scrapbook that remains in overall good condition for its age features newspaper articles about the Rangers as well as period photographs of many of the players that have signed the stick, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
