Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Always a challenging and inviting set for collectors to build, an overall fairly pleasing near-complete assembly of Topps' 1967-68 hockey release is up for grabs here, highlighted by a group of ten (10) freshly graded PSA offerings. Released the first season into what became known as the National Hockey League's "expansion era", starting with the graded cards, all having been recently received back from inspection and encapsulation at PSA's headquarters, Bobby Orr see's his card, #92 in the checklist, having been deemed worthy of a VG-EX 4 designation while his Calder Memorial Trophy specimen sports an EX-MT 6 and his All-Star card another VG-EX 4. Additionally, "Mr. Hockey" has had his cards graded as well, with his main series release garnering a mark of NM-MT 8 and his All-Star card a VG-EX 4 while Bobby Hull's main series card now sports a mark of EX+ 5.5 over its label. With the checklist card, #120, having been slabbed to the tune of a NM 7, the final three (3) cards that have been graded include the key rookie cards of Jacques Lemaire (EX 5), Derek Sanderson (EX 5) and Rogatien Vachon (VG-EX 4). For the rest of the cards, all found in their original raw and ungraded form, the group is seen as being in the overall high-grade condition range of EX-MT to NM throughout, with the key cards of 32-P. Esposito (60-40 centering), 70-Cournoyer (light wax stain), 72-H. Richard (lightly faded on back), 74-Beliveau, 79-Mahovlich, 85-Giacomin (60-40 centering), 114-Mikita, 123-Giacomin AS, 127-Horton AS (60-40 centering) and 129-Hall AS. Additionally, the cards of 16-Horton (slight discolouration at the top border) and 99-Cheevers (60-40 centering and slight discolouration to the left border) are both around the scope of EX-MT condition while card #124, Bobby Hull's All-Star card, is seen as being in the range of VG-EX to EX because of a stain at the left border. Only missing cards #'d 2, 4, 5, 8, 42, 45, 49, 58, 66-checklist 1, 67, 71, 84, 86, 87, 93, 95, 98, 121, 126-Mikita AS and 132-Ullman AS for a complete set, it is also worth noting that among the included cards, #1 of Gump Worsley shows a slight elastic mark that makes it a condition exception. A wonderful trip down memory lane awaits our lucky winning bidder.
