Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Playing 460 of his 550 games in the National Hockey League in the famed bleu, blanc et rouge of the Montreal Canadiens, Howie Morenz helped the "Flying Frenchmen" to a trio of Stanley Cup championships during his time with the club and won three (3) Hart Memorial Trophy's as the NHL's Most Valuable Player. Having had his numbered retired by the Habs upon his death in 1937, the first time the team had bestowed the honour upon a player, Morenz would go on to be posthumously inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 as one of the original nine inductees. Issued as a premium to the classic V357 World Wide Gum "Ice Kings" card set, this oversized photo card features the great Morenz. At 7" x 9" and on firm card stock, Morenz is shown in his Habs uniform, with the reverse blank. Regarding condition, light foxing and stain spots are seen throughout the front of the card along with light-to-moderate wear to the corners and edges. Also showing a minor crease at the bottom right corner, a light wrinkle is observed at the top edge on the reverse as well. Additionally, also included with the lot are the 1935-40 Crown Brand Hockey photos of both Morenz and Montreal Canadiens teammate, Aurel Joliat. Both missing their backings, the Morenz remains in excellent condition with just light residue staining to the top edge of the reverse that has bled through to the front a bit, which is also seen on the Joliat example in a heavier form. The Joliat photo also shows some very light wear to the corners and edges that is worth mentioning for accuracy.
