Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/1/2024
Always a hit with collectors, appreciated for their beautiful oversized condition-sensitive images and scarce survival rate, Montreal’s La Presse issued newsprint photos of the greatest hockey stars of the day over a period of five seasons, spanning from 1927-28 to 1931-32. Profiling athletes of the day from a multitude of sports with an 11” x 17” newsprint photo in each Saturday edition, offered here we present this lot consisting of HOFers George Vezina, Aurel Joliat and Eddie Shore. All displaying in overall beautiful condition with vivid colours seen throughout, the Vezina (March 3rd, 1928) and Joliat (December 17th, 1927) examples have been carefully cut at their right side edge from the other page that they would have been attached to and both show light wear to the edge and corners, including small rips/tears and light foxing/staining. Showing the largest tear on the Joliat example along the right side edge that measures around 1" in length, it is also worth pointing out that some creasing is seen over both as well, heaviest at the top of the Vezina example and corners of the Joliat photo. Also including the photo of Boston Bruins blueliner, Eddie Shore (April 7th, 1928), the Shore specimen is still attached to its neighbouring newsprint sheet and is found to be largely in the same condition and the Vezina and Joliat pictures listed above in terms of the toning that is observed throughout and heaviest along the edges, the photo does avoid the commonly seen small tears and rips around the edges that make this one a special example to behold.
