Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Advancing to the Stanley Cup final in 1945 after defeating chief rival the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs battled the Detroit Red Wings, with the series going the full seven games. HOFer Babe Pratt would score the winning goal for the blue and white in Game 7, as the Leafs slipped passed the Wings 2-1. This lot contains a Leafs document collection of 7 pertaining to the Cup win that season, including one signed by deceased HOFer Hap Day, and a very interesting Canadian export permit regarding the Stanley Cup being shipped to Detroit. Included, we have 4 documents - one addressed to Hap Day, another signed by Day (flawless dark ink signature), and one addressed to Frank Selke regarding "souvenirs" to be engraved with the Leafs players names including "sterling silver ashtrays" (we previously sold the ashtray awarded to Ted Kennedy in 2010, link in the box beneath). Next, we have an April 23, 1945 telegram addressed to Day congratulating him on the Leafs Stanley Cup win, followed by a cover letter addressed to league president and HOFer Red Dutton regarding the shipping of the Stanley Cup, and finally, the actual Export Permit for shipping the Cup. This document is especially interesting as they list the value of the Cup to be $500.00 (approx $8,700.00 in 2024 dollars). The documents all show light wear (one has some fold lines), and are still in the original duotang folder.
