Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/1/2024
A member of the inaugural Pro Football Hall of Fame induction class in 1963, as well as the president of the American Professional Football Association before it became the NFL, Jim Thorpe is widely considered one of the greatest athletes in history. Famously winning gold at two events at the Summer Olympics in 1912, Thorpe excelled on the gridiron, hoops court and diamond - playing six seasons of Major League Baseball in the 1910s. This original 1910s Type I photo of Thorpe by the noteworthy Brown Brothers has been graded "Authentic" by PSA. Measuring 5" x 6", and pictured in what appears to be his New York Giants uniform, Thorpe is shown staring at the camera, bat in hand. The reverse has a number and stamps from the Brown Brothers, with "Jim Thorpe" handwritten in pencil. Exhibiting a few surface cracks/creases over three of the corners, the image of Thorpe is not affected, with the photo in very pleasing overall condition.
